Pacemakers, defibrillators and cardiac resynchronization therapy clinic
There are different types of cardiac devices such as pacemakers, cardio-defibrillators and re-synchronizers.
- Pacemakers generate energy which is sent to the heart muscle to maintain the heart beats.
- Cardio-defibrillators perform the functions of the pacemaker and recognize arrhythmias that may compromise the life of the patient. The Cardio-defibrillator recognizes the arrhythmia, analyzes it and if necessary, generates an electric impulse that can stop the arrhythmia.
- Re-synchronizers perform both the functions of the cardio-defibrillators and Re-synchronizers which consists in making ALL the heart beats behave in an orderly way, to optimize de heart function and thereby improve symptoms of heart failure.
The periodic revision of the devices, called the Pacemaker Clinic, improves their operation and indirectly extends their useful life. This is performed though a noninvasive review of several parameters that are recorded in the device, as well as the detection and analysis of arrhythmias, which could even be asymptomatic for the patient In addition, the life of the battery can be predicted, so an appointment will be programmed for the precise date of change.
What do I need to go to a pacemaker clinic?
All patients with a cardiac device can be treated in the pacemaker clinic of Cardio Care,
- You should know the brand of the device to coordinate an appointment with the technician and electrophysiologist to conduct the appropriate review and analysis.
- No special preparation is required.
- A previous appointment is required.
Procedure
The day of the appointment, a device will be placed on the skin above the battery. This procedure does not cause any pain however when the reprogramming starts, the patient may feel some palpitations due to stimulus to the heart during the revision.
