Invasive procedure through which a catheter is inserted into the coronary orifice, where a special fluid (medium contrast) is injected and using X-rays, (fluoroscopy), it´s possible to determine the presence of lesions in arteries and their severity.

Preparation:

  • 6-8 hours of fasting, although it’s not essential, especially if it’s an emergency.
  • Your physician will tell you what medications to take on the day of the procedure.
  • Medicines, such as anticoagulants, will be reduced or stopped, which is left to the discretion of the physician.

These instructions should be followed accurately, otherwise the procedure may have to be canceled or delayed.

Procedure

  • Usually performed under local anesthesia.
  • There may be discomfort at the site of the puncture of the respective vessel, which is regularly in one of the arms or groins.
  • During the procedure, the patient is alert and cooperating with the physician with deeper breaths, coughing or stopping respirations as requested by the physician.
  • A small catheter is inserted into an artery in the leg (femoral artery) or in the arm (radial artery) and through the blood vessels is carried to the coronary arteries, where a contrast solution is injected and this way together with the fluoroscopy equipment, the coronary arteries are drawn for a diagnosis.
  • Based on the results of this test, the physician may immediately proceed to perform an angioplasty to clear any obstructed arteries.
