Noninvasive test to determine the cause of syncope , especially if it’s suspected to be mainly of a neurocardiogenic origin or neurologically mediated. Its sensitivity is 75% and its specificity is 88%.

It is recommended cases where the patient has recurrent episodes of syncope without a specific cause or in those cases where such symptoms occur in patients with high-risk occupations or jobs.

Before the test

  • 4 hours of fasting
  • Don’t drink coffee or soda 12 hours before the test
  • No smoke in the last 6 hours
  • Suspend beta blockers 2 days before the test, such as: Tenormin, Coreg, Prolaken, Inderal, Atenolol, Propanolol, Bisoprolol, Metropolol, Carvedilol, Sotalol, Nebivolol, among others.
  • You must sign an informed consent form in which you will confirm that you voluntarily wish to perform this test, that you have been informed and that your doubts about the procedure were resolved.
  • You must be accompanied by a relative and dress in comfortable two piece clothing
  • You must inform if you are or suspect to be pregnant.

Preparation for the test

  • You will be asked to lie down on a special stretcher with the ability to tilt.
  • You will be given an intravenous line with saline solution.
  • You will be fastened with bands to the stretcher, in order to avoid you to fall in case syncope occurs.
  • The study is monitored basally (electrocardiogram and blood pressure) and later you will be placed at 70 ° degrees.
  • If you don’t have any disorder after 20-30 minutes in that position, you will be stimulated with the administration of sublingual nitrates and will continue to be monitored.
  • If you present an episode of syncope or pre syncope with changes in heart rate or blood pressure, the test is considered positive and it ends.
