It´s a test that assesses the health and condition of the heart during exercise and provides valuable information on:
- The physical condition of the person.
- The response of blood pressure and heart rate during different levels of exercise.
- The origin and severity of different chest pains or other cardiovascular symptoms.
- The effectiveness and degree of response to different cardiovascular treatments in use.
- The status of the coronary circulation and lower limbs.
- The amount and type of exercise to be performed in a physical reconditioning program.
Before the test:
- The time required for the preparation and the conduction of the test will be approximately half an hour.
- You should not eat, smoke, or drink beverages that contain caffeine or alcohol three hours before the test.
- You should continue all medications unless your doctor tells you otherwise.
- Wear comfortable shoes and clothing for exercise.
How is the test conducted?
- Electrodes (soft gel conductive patches) are placed on the chest after cleaning for better conduction of electric signal to measure the heart electric activity of the heart and blood pressure. This is a way to measure the heart's reaction, due to the need for more oxygen required when exercising.
- You will be asked to walk on a treadmill.
- The test will continue until the desired heart rate or pulse is reached, unless symptoms such as chest pain or exaggerated elevation of blood pressure are present, in which case the cardiologist will end the study.
- Monitoring will continue for five minutes after the end of the test or until the changes given in the electrocardiogram are normalized.
- Tell your doctor if you have taken medications such as Viagra, Cialis, Levitra or similar within the last 24 hours to change you appointment, this is necessary because nitroglycerin may be used to relieve chest pain and it cannot be combined with these medications.
