What is sleep apnea?
It is a sleep disorder in which breathing has a pause or decreases while a person is sleeping. Breathing usually comes back with a snore.
What are the symptoms?
- Tiredness or fatigue throughout the day
- Snoring
- Dry mouth or sore throat
- Headaches
What happens if left untreated?
There is an increase in the possibility of suffering heart attacks, strokes, developing diabetes, hypertension, and therefore the risk of death is increased
It may be responsible for car accidents, poor work performance, forgetfulness and weakening
What diagnostic method is there?
The ApneaLink is a small device that allows the person to be monitored during sleep, to detect apnea, air flow limitations and easy snoring. The equipment is placed overnight, while the person sleeps and its retired in the morning.
The polysomnography is carried out in a specialized center for sleep, in this study they monitor it while the patient is sleeping.
What treatments are there?
Losing weight, quitting smoking and exercising are the primary treatments. Special mouthguards can be used for sleep apnea, which helps improve the passage of air in the upper respiratory tract
The CPAP is a device that, through a mask, draws pressurized air to allow it to pass through the throat, preventing the narrowing and collapse of the airways
In some cases, due to anatomical reasons or changes in the airways, surgery may be indicated. Each case must be evaluated and decided together with its treating doctors. Occasionally removing hypertrophic polyps or tonsils may help treatment.
